OUTCOME
Challange
Gamification can increase engagement, but poorly designed rewards, streaks, and feedback systems can create pressure, dependency, and reduce intrinsic motivation. The challenge was to make psychological research on motivation accessible and actionable for designers.
DESIGN PROCESS
Solution
Motivo combines Self-Determination Theory, locus of control, expectancy shifts, learned helplessness, and the Octalysis framework into a structured design guideline. It helps designers understand different motivational needs and make more intentional gamification decisions.
Solution
With the help of Motivo Guidelines, designers are guided toward creating gamified experiences that gradually shift users from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation, encouraging engagement driven by personal value rather than external rewards.
